Milk Carton Castles!

Our castles are nearing completion and they are looking fabulous!  This project was part of our Literacy Program as we are focusing on procedural writing and sequencing (putting things in order).  Students had to follow the king's instructions carefully as they constructed with their team.  This project also incorporated curriculum outcomes for mathematics, art, and team building!  Great job Fantastic Fours!  The castles will be on display in the lobby of the school for the next week if parents or guardians would like to take a peek! :)

1 Litre Milk Cartons

Hi everyone!  Thanks for dropping by our class blog!  I know it's been awhile since I have posted on here, but you all know how things get!  I really enjoyed meeting with each of you over the last few days of Parent-Teacher Interviews!!

We are still looking for a few more 1 litre milk cartons for our castle making project we will be starting next week (hopefully!!).  If you have any more to contribute that would be great!

Also, multiplication flash cards will be going home with your child on Monday.  If you can have your child cut them out and keep them in the baggie to practise each night it would be a huge benefit to your child!

Lets hope the warm weather continues and we can keep enjoying the sunshine :)

Pie-Throw!

Well, today was quite the day at Athena!  In the afternoon the whole school participated in the Terry Fox run/walk around the soccer and baseball field.  After the run was the pie throw!  Students who paid their $5 got to throw a whip-cream pie at a teacher of their choice!  Take a look at a few of the pictures.  It was quite messy and slimy!! A great day all round!

Computer Lab on Fri. Sept 30, 2011

Hello my Fantastic Fours!
I hope you have had a great few days with Mr. Belbin!

First, please make sure to connect the printer to the Computer Lab!  Josh (our peer helper will show you how to do this!)  This morning in the Computer Lab I would like you to open up Microsoft Word by clicking on the Student file.  The symbol for Microsoft Word is a big blue W!  When you have opened it I would like you to type me a paragraph (4-5 sentences) telling me who your hero is.  Your hero could be someone who you look up to, or want to be like when you grow-up, or the most important person in your life.  Make sure to tell me why that person is your hero.

My paragraph would look something like this:

My hero would definitely be my mom.  She is my hero because she is always very positive, encouraging, hard-working and funny!  Whenever I am feeling down I know I can call my mom and she will always make me feel better.  She always laughs and smiles and I want to be just like her when I grow up!

When you are finished your paragraph make sure your name is on it and print it.

Have a wonderful weekend.  I'm looking forward to seeing you all on Monday :)

Terry Fox Run and Pie Throw!

Tomorrow (Wed. Sept 28th) will be our annual Terry Fox run here at the school.  At 1:00 we will begin walking/running around the soccer field.  At around 2:00 students who paid $5 will get to throw a pie at a teacher!  Here's to hoping I don't look like this guy at the end of the day!!!

Welcome to Worm Week!

This week in Grade 4 is Worm Week!  We have made worm habitats and are studying whether earthworms prefer moist or dry soil.  Our class hypothesized that earthworms would travel to the moist soil, because students remember seeing earthworms under wet, rotting logs, when we were on our field trip last week!  Worms will be going home tomorrow night!  Feel free to have them as 'outside pets'!!!!! :)

Ecosystem Field Trip!

Last week we visited the Rotary Friendship Park and found lots of wildlife up trees, in the tall grasses, by the pond, under rotting logs and in sandy areas.  It was a gorgeous day to explore insects and animals in their natural habitats!!  Ask your child about some of their interesting finds!

Parent Information Night!

I hope you are all settling into the school routine and that your child has enjoyed the first few days of school.  We have an awesome class!!  There have been lots of forms sent home over the last few nights, so hopefully you have been able to read through and fill out the forms to be returned!

Parent Information Night will be held on Monday, September 12th at 6:30 in the gym, and then back to the classrooms!  Hope to see you there. :)

Any questions, feel free to contact me!

Welcome to Grade 4!

I am very excited to be teaching Grade 4 at Athena Consolidated this year.  I am looking forward to meeting and getting to know each of my students and their parents, as well.  Grade 4 is an exciting year, and we will have lots of fun!  I encourage both students and parents to check this blog regularly to follow activities and events going on in our classroom community throughout the year.  I strive to inspire students to foster a love of learning that will be carried with them for the rest of their lives.  Together let's make this a fantastic year! :)
